I'm getting greedy by the day: Bips

Saturday was the last day of shooting for Abbas-Mustan's Race. "It has shaped up so well in spite of the delay. I'm looking forward to its release. It's my first comedy. As time passes I'm getting greedier by the day. So yes, I'm looking at scripts abroad."

Bipasha Basu is currently looking at several international scripts. "Within a month I'll be signing my first international film. Time? I'll make time for it if it's worth my while. English is a language I'm very comfortable with."

Bipasha does have an international personality. "And the one thing that I'm very strongly going to oppose is any effort to slot me as an Indian with a sing-song voice, in any international project.

If I was willing to play the stereotypical Indian I'd be doing Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Ltd and so many other projects that have come my way. But I want to play mainstream normal characters in West, not ethnic Asian people."

In fact John Abraham plays a non-Indian in Deepa Mehta's Luna.

"Yes, " concedes. "To have a global diction certainly helps. Any filmmaker that I've met abroad has liked my voice. The way I speak is what they liked the best about me. Everything is in-sync sound out there. So a correct voice and diction is a major battle won."

Elaborating further Bipasha adds, "There're so many really beautiful actresses from Korea and China who have failed to make the grade abroad because of their thick accents. I don't want to unlearn my language. Whatever parts come my way abroad don't need me to change my voice or personality in any way."

Bipasha to play Ben Kingsley's daughter

In all probability Bipasha Basu’s first international project will be a Moghul historical featuring Ben Kingsley and Aishwarya Rai. And she's playing Shah Jahan’s (Ben Kingsley) devoted daughter Jahanara Beghum.

"Yes, there's another role in the film," Bipsha reveals softly. "And Ben Kingsley has asked me to do it. We've already spoken about it. And now we just need to work out the dates."

While Ben Kingsley and Aishwarya will play Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal respectively, Bipasha says, "There's a very special character which Ben has asked me to play."

The idea of Bipasha being part of Sir Ben's production on the building of the Taj Mahal germinated when they met at the 7Wonders event in Lisbon. "We hit it off like a house on fire. Ben's so much fun. And when he offered me this role I was fascinated."

Back home, on the work front Bipasha has just completed Abbas-Mustan's Race with Saif Ali Khan and is looking forward to Goal with John. "Race has shaped up so well in spite of the delay. I’m looking forward to its release. It's my first comedy. As time passes I’m getting greedier by the day. I now want to do something exotic, like the project with Ben Kingsley. I really want Rituparno Ghosh to start Draupadi with me. I know I can play Draupadi convincingly."

Hrithik Roshan will sell Magic Moments

These are called the ‘Magic Moments’ of Bollywood. When the stars give their signatures to their fans, it’s called as an ‘autograph’. And if they give their signatures to companies, it’s called a ‘deal’. The recent times have seen the liquor category being the latest industry to encash on the ‘Bollywoodisation’ fever.

In the past, one has seen stars like the eternal Dharmendra, the ever- bankable SRK, Shiney Ahuja, Zayed Khan and even Shilpa Shetty doing the honours, by striking deal with liquor brand/s. One such ‘deal’ is what Hrithik Roshan has struck with Radico Khaitan’s premium brand ‘Magic Moments’. After having endorsed vests, soaps, mobile phones, biscuits etc, Hrithik seems to be on a roll with this endorsement. Reasoning Hrithik as the choice, Abhishek Khaitan, MD, Radico Khaitan, said that Hrithik’s energy, style personality fits well with the brand’s personality.

Knowing the perfectionist that he is, we think that this deal has just happened to him and that too, at the right time, when he has just wrapped up Jodhaa Akbar, a movie that is known to have taken the best out of our man, all thanks to those bulky costumes, accessories etc… After having given it all to this magnum, opus, at last its time to say cheers.

Promos of Taare Zameen Par and Jodhaa Akbar

The theatrical promos of two of the most awaited films, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodhaa Akbar and Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par are all set to be released soon. The promos will hit the cinema screens on October 12.

Jodhaa Akbar featuring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is an epic movie which deals with the life of Emperor Akbar and his queen, Jodhaa bai. The film is slated to release on January 25, 2008. While Taare Zameen Par which features Aamir Khan is scheduled to release by December 21, 2007.

SRK's challenge - Decide the moves of 'Dard E Disco'

In quick time 'Dard-e-Disco' from Om Shanti Om has become a track that has been much appreciated, much debated and much danced to!

While the makers have been closely following the popularity of the song since it was heard first around a month back, they have also come up with a unique idea of involving those very people who have made the song a chartbuster it is today.

Going by Shahrukh Khan's 'mantra' of “You have heard the track, now you decide the moves”, CNN-IBN, leading English news channel, has unveiled a novel talent hunt that is fun, interactive and one that offers the contestants a dream meeting with their favorite stars.

Titled 'Dard-e-Disco Dance Challenge', this mega talent hunt, in collaboration with Farah Khan directed Om Shanti Om has been launched on its website www.ibnlive.com. The contest would require a contestant to log on to the site and download the 'Dard-e-Disco' soundtrack. Thereafter he/she is required to shoot a video of self dancing to the song and upload it on the website.

States Farah Khan, "I am sure there would be quite a lot of fun in the offering once a common man on the street starts dancing to the beats of 'Dard-e-Disco'. We want every 'bhelpoori wallah' and 'rickshaw wallah' to get grooving to the beat."

Since every man on the street may not really be internet savvy, at their end CNN-IBN would have their Youth Icon Paras Tomar tour different cities for five consecutive weeks and shoot 'Dard-e-Disco' dancers. Paras' itinerary in these cities has been listed down on the website.

So is this not going to be one of those true-blue-professionals at work? "It has to be as whacky as possible. I am expecting people out there to really go mad. Madder the dance steps, more is going to be the fun," quips Farah.

Jury members Farah Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone will watch the entries and shortlist contestants in four phases. Short listed entries will be hosted on the website and viewers will rate the videos. Every week five short listed videos will also be aired on CNN-IBN and viewers will vote through SMS.

In the end, five top contestants will be short listed and flown to Mumbai for the Grand Finale. Five lucky winners will get a chance to train with Farah Khan’s dancers.

Suddenly Sonam has exposed me: Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor has just done a photo-shoot with daughter Sonam, and he's glowing with parental pride. He speaks to Subhash K Jha.

How does it feel to share camera space with your daughter?
I'm numbed when I look at her finesse on screen. I'm just so anxious about Sawariya. I know she has done her best. And now we can only wait for reactions. You know, when I saw her in the rushes I wasn't just looking at her.

I was also looking at the entire film. There's a father and a film person looking proudly at Sawariya. As someone who understands cinema I can recognize the excellence of Sawariya. Everything works in it. Sonam is in a win-win situation.

Unlike you when you started out…
(chuckles) That's right. I started with bit roles in Ek Baar Kaho and Hamare Tumhare, then made my way up. Sonam has Sony Pictures and Sanjay Bhansali backing her ambitions. How much higher can she start?

There's so much sincerity in the project. As a matter of fact, my responsibilities towards Sonam were taken over by Sanjay.I don't think I could've done a better job.

Were you tempted to launch her?
No way! I never knew Sonam wanted to be an actress. Her decision was a bolt from the blue. By the time I got to know her ambitions Sanjay was already working with her.

Sanjay Bhansali compares Sonam to Waheeda Rehman and Rekha.
I'm speechless when he says that. Sonam has a certain god-given presence. What can I say about her? To me she's my child. I just want her to work hard and look after herself. She must enjoy herself while acting. In Sawariya she has surprised me. But honestly she has a long way to go.

Were you pained when she had to push herself so hard for her debut film?
Look Subhash, I'm a very hard worker myself. I've pushed myself beyond my capacity all my life. I'd expect nothing less from Sonam. Nothing comes easy in life. Hard work is the only way to succeed. I don't believe in sitting back and letting destiny take over.

Not sleeping, working around-the-clock…these are essential to achieve excellence. Recently I went to release the album of Ustad Bismillah Khan's pupil Shubha Ghosh. The famous classical dancer Sitara Devi was also there. I told her she was so lucky to have her guru's guidance.

You never had that kind of guidance?
I virtually crawled up to where I am. Also, there were no expectations riding on me whereas there's much expected from Sonam. More than being her father's daughter, the expectations come from being Sanjay Bhansali's heroine. I feel the guru-shishya parampara has all but vanished.

With Sanjay-Sonam the guru-shishya parampara is back.He has been as much a father to her as me. The way he has trained both Ranbir and Sonam, is unbelievable. I wish I had a Sanjay Bhansali to launch me. The end-product and the reaction to it are stupendous.

Why is your wife so aloof from it all?
She's just shy of the film industry. But she's completely involved with Sonam's career. Sunita is happy with her privacy. She has her own friends away from the industry. I believe that in every marriage the partners should do what makes them happy. She says I've spoilt her completely.I've never persuaded her to do anything.

And one filmy spouse is enough in a family.
Oh yes! I'm unabashedly filmy. I love cinema. That's my life. I've never been obsessed with money. I've done films for the love of cinema. In that sense, Shabana Azmi has always been a role model. She has made a big contribution to my life and career. I can never forget that.

Rishi Kapoor was your colleague. Now you and he share the same anxieties as expectant fathers?
Yes. We go back a long way. Not that we meet every day. But we've always been very very close.

My mom and Rishi's mom Krishnaji have been friends for over fifty years. Not a single day goes by without their interaction. The two families share a really deep bond.

Would Sonam's presence in the film industry make you selfconscious?
Me and selfconscious don't go together. I'm in a totally different zone.

I make people selfconscious… But yes, of course it makes a difference. Suddenly Sonam is there to remind the industry of my age. I'm exposed.

A dimpled little girl required to play Preity's role

Preity Zinta is in a spot of trouble. She needs a child to play her in the earlier part of Jhanu Barua's Har Pal. But they are unable to find the right face.

Says Preity, "The problem is we need a little girl who not only resembles me but also has prominent dimples, and not just on one cheek. We've come across sweet little girls with one dimple. But since God has gifted me with dimples on both cheeks the hunt is on for a miniature Preity with the necessary holes in her cheeks."

Until the director finds the right face the shooting of the childhood portions is on hold. "And we've to find her fast," Preity is desperate. One option was Ayesha Kapoor from Black. "My God what a powerhouse performer!" says Preity. “She played the blind girl so convincingly. I've worked with the blind and I've seen them move their exactly cornea like Ayesha. But Ayesha's image after Black is too strong. What do we do? I really envy Manisha Koirala. In Khamoshi: The Musical. Sanjay Leela Bhansali found a girl who was not only a pint-sized replica of Manisha but also as talented."

As things stand the hunt is on for a twin-dimpled miniature Preity. "If we don't find her I'll have to play her myself," she jokes.
